One day in 1998, Bill saw a photo in a book on African American quilters by Roland Freeman that captivated him. The picture showed Annie Mae Young with a quilt she had made draped over a woodpile in her yard. “Wow!” said Bill. “Let’s go find that woman.”

Armed with the book, he and Matt set out. When they finally arrived at Annie Mae’s house on the outskirts of Gee’s Bend, she was surprised. She had never seen the book with a picture of her and her quilt, so Bill gave her his copy. “What happened to that quilt?” he asked. She thought she had burned it to make room for others. But she allowed the Arnetts to look through her house. At last she called, “I think I found it!” and offered to give it to them. Bill insisted on paying for it.
